Satisfaction of Patients by Nurse¡¯s Communication Styles

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate satisfaction of patients by nurse¡¯s communication styles.
Methods: The subjects were 127 patients who were hospitalized in 3 general hospitals, in Seoul and Jeju. To evaluate nurse¡¯s communication style score and patient satisfaction score, the self-reported questionnaire was used. Nurse¡¯s communication style consisted of informative and affiliative communication sytles and each communicaion style included 5~6 questionnaire items. Each item was measured with 5-point Likerttype response format ranging from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree" and each communication style point was calculated by the mean of 5~6 items point. Patient satisfaction scale was measured with 5-point Likert-type response format .Relation between nurse¡¯s communication styles and pateint satisfaction was tested by using regression linear analysis.
Results: Informative and affiliative communication styles were positively related to patients¡¯ satisfaction. There was different relation between nurse¡¯s communication style and patients¡¯ satisfaction in subgroups of sex, age, educational level, hospital stay, disease severity level.
Conclusion: To improve patient¡¯s satisfaction, it may be helpful to select an appropriate communication style of a nurse according to patient¡¯s characteristics.
